DSD Tutorial: Turn Your Photo Into A Magazine Cover
Day 1

THIS PROGRESSIVE CHALLENGE IS UNIQUE. YOU CAN KEEP CHANGING YOUR PHOTO, TITLES, ETC AT ANY TIME BEFORE THE FINAL UPLOAD
Here are a few samples of how other people created their magazine cover

1. Find a photo from your stash.
Professional type portraits are ideal but not necessary.
This photo needs to an 8 x 10.
You may need to resize it.

2. To upsize your photo with the least amount of damage:
Click Image/Image Size from the pull down menu.
Change the width and height to 110% (percent)
Choose Bicubic Smooth

Repeat until your photo is at least an 8 x 10.

Here is the photo that I choose:

There is too much clutter in the background where I will be putting my article teasers.
If you have the same problem, here's one way to solve it:
(If you do not need to fix the problem, skip to # 7)

3. Turn your photo into a Smart Object
Convert to Smart Object.jpg

4. Choose Filter/Gaussian Blur/ from the pull down menu.

5. Adjust the radius slider to blur out the background clutter.
Don't worry that the entire photo is blurred or how much blur you choose, we will fix that in the next step.

6. With a small, soft (0% hardness) black brush, paint over the areas in the filter mask where you do not want the blur.
Note: If your layer does not automatically add a filter mask, right click on Smart Filters and choose "Add Filter Mask"

Adjust the hardness of your brush when you are close to the edges of the area you don't want blurred.
Switch back and forth from the black to white brush to conceal or reveal the blur.

You can adjust the amount of blur by double clicking on Gaussian blur and moving the radius slider.
You can adjust the opacity of the blur by double clicking on the icon right next to the Gaussian blur

7. Open a new white layer file 8 inches wide and 10 inches long with the same resolution as your photo.

8. Drag your photo into this new white file.

Save your file and make a copy to flatten and upload to your gallery.
Post the thumbnail in this thread so we can see what you have created so far.

Tomorrow we will add a white border and create our magazine title.

This challenge is also this month's New To Me

You can complete the challenge any time during the month.
But if you want to do it with friends, then for the next four days, there will be instructions for each part of your magazine cover.

Whether you complete your magazine cover this weekend or by the end of the month, you will still get the posting bonus, A Winter Kiss by Dae Designs. :yahoo2:

Shhh....a birdie told me (must be one of Barbara's) that there will be a surprise posting bonus for those who participate in the DSD challenges

Choosing a photo will be the hardest part of this challenge for me.

I agree.

AND in this progressive scrap, you can change the photo at any time.

I changed mine a few times.

FYI: Best to choose one that doesn't require a lot of background removal.

Another quick technique to hide the background is to put a Levels (or other darkening adjustment layer on top of your photo) and move the slider so the clutter is dark and doesn't catch your eye. Then use the mask filter to bring back what you don't want darkened.

I've done one that way and will post it probably tomorrow.
Still working on it.

DSD Tutorial: Turn Your Photo Into A Magazine Cover
Day 2

Let's add a small white border over the photo.

1. Make a new layer on top of the photo layer and name it Border

2. Fill the layer with white.

3. Click on the FX icon and choose Stroke.

4. Choose settings similar to these:
Border stroke.jpg

5. Change the Fill Opacity of this layer to 0 (zero)
Fill opacity.jpg
Fill opacity.jpg (53.36 KiB) Viewed 382 times

You can always edit the color and size of this Stroke by double clicking on the word Stroke

Let's create the magazine title

You will need a thick font and one that is easy to read.

I used the font Stencil for the title font and Myriad Pro for the word magazine.

Adjust your text size, color etc and place it where you want it on the page.

You can add FXs to the text to add a gradient, pattern, color overlay etc.

Here's what mine looks like so far:

Day 2
Tomorrow we will add the Article teasers and (optional) date.
So be thinking of some article titles.

REMEMBER YOU CAN EDIT YOUR MAGAZINE AT ANY TIME BEFORE THE FINAL UPLOAD.

DSD Tutorial: Turn Your Photo Into A Magazine Cover
Day 3

Magazines display teasers on the cover so customers will buy it and read the articles.

Your article teasers can be serious, funny, clever, informative...whatever you want.

These teasers need to draw attention, so the use of color, bold, italic, drop shadow is often used.

Here's a couple of samples:
Bday Magazine.jpg
Bday Magazine.jpg (81.39 KiB) Viewed 375 times
Kids Magazine.jpg
Kids Magazine.jpg (116.23 KiB) Viewed 375 times

You can put your teasers on either side of the photo or both sides.

(Optional) Add a date or month name somewhere near the title or ?

Save your file.

Flatten it and upload it to your gallery.

Post a copy here in this thread.

REMEMBER WITH THIS PROGRESSIVE SCRAP, YOU CAN EDIT ANY PIECE OF IT BEFORE THE FINAL UPLOAD.
