New To Me August: Creating Brushes

Wed Jul 27, 2016 9:07 pm

We'll be creating three kinds of brushes: free style, an element brush and a custom shape brush.

FREE STYLE:

1. Open a new document. Here are the specs that I used:

Note: All three of these brushes will be pixel based. It will lose quality if enlarged so make the brush as big as you'll need. Be mindful that the bigger the brush, the more space it will take on your hard drive too.

2. With the default foreground color of black, click on the Brush tools and choose a small hard brush.

3. Draw a simple design on your new document. This is what I drew:

4. Choose Edit/Define Brush Preset from the top pull-down menu.

5. Name your brush in the pop-up dialogue box.

6. Your brush is ready to use. Open up a new document and brush away!

NOTE: To find your new brush after you have changed brushes, choose Window/Brush Presets from the top pull-down menu.
Scroll to the bottom and you should see it there.
By default, Photoshop puts the newest brush at the bottom of the stack.

ELEMENT BRUSH

1. Choose an element from your stash. I chose Metamucil.

2. Choose Edit/Define Brush Present from the top pull-down menu. (Same as step #4 above)

3. Name your brush and click OK

4. Your brush is ready to use! Here's what Metamucil looks like as a brush

Notice that all brushes are in grayscale. They behave as a grayscale, so make all your brushes BLACK

NOTE: To make a silhouette from your brush, simply fill the inside of the element with black. Repeat steps #4 & 5 from the Free Style instructions.

CUSTOM SHAPE BRUSH:
1. Open a new document like the one in the Free Style instructions.

2. Click on the Custom Shape tool.

3. Choose the Shape Layers option from the options bar.

4. Choose a shape from the menu. I chose a star.

5. While holding the Shift key (to maintain proportions), draw your custom shape in the document.

6. Ctrl click on the layer's Vector Mask to select it.

Here's what I came up with:
Image

The first is obviously my free-style brush, a simple sprig of pine. For the second, the custom shape brush, I chose a campfire shape, shown here in 3 layers in different colors. For the element brush I used an image from the recently released digitized collection of public domain images from the New York Public Library, shown as the original and the brush. This was fun, and I learned a few new things about creating brushes as well.

OK - this was fun, and interesting. I drew a goofy little flower, then I turned my cow into a brush, and used a shape to make the $ because I needed it for my Art Journal #32 page. :D When I put them on a layout to post I played with changing the color to see what they might look like. :D

.....and here they are.
